Photo exhibition “Cerro dos Noivos”

Photo exhibition “Cerro dos Noivos”

de Paulo Martins

Casa dos Condes – Carlos Brito Municipal Library, Rua 1º de maio, Alcoutim

The project “Cerro dos Noivos” is made up of 13 photographs, collected by the author in November 2021 when he accompanied his parents “to the land”, place of Balurcos (Cercado), to help them pick olives, on a small plot of land located on a hill with the same name.

Due to his paternal family connection, trips to Alcoutim, more precisely to the place of Balurcos (Cercado), where his father is from, are frequent and with photography as his passion, the author recorded the moment with the intention of creating memories that he did not have.

From the experience, the author explains that “at the same time as I helped with the olive picking, I was recording the manual work involved in the entire process and my mother’s delivery at that moment, as if it were a ceremony. Strangely enough, or not, coincidence, the land is known as “Cerro dos Noivos”, at times I found myself looking at my mother arranging the white blankets under the olive trees, as if it were a wedding veil. The photographs are the testimonies that record my mother and her inner strength, which, despite her 76 years of age, contrasted with the fragility of my father (the “groom”), shown in the last photograph of the project”.

Exhibition “Cerâmicas de Alcoutim, a quarter of a century: 1997 – 2022”

Exhibition “Cerâmicas de Alcoutim, a quarter of a century: 1997 – 2022”

A Venda de Alcoutim, on Av.ª Duarte Pacheco, Alcoutim

The Cerâmicas de Alcoutim studio was established in Monte de Cortes Pereiras in 1997, a family project, founded by the couple António Teixeira and Isabel Ferreira and dedicated to the production of ceramics, including decorative and utilitarian pottery, artistic and sculptural ceramics and tile-making.

To celebrate the quarter of a century of this very special atelier, the Museu Municipal/Municipality of Alcoutim presents the exhibition “Ceramics of Alcoutim, a quarter of a century: 1997 – 2022” in a new space dedicated to the promotion of endogenous resources, “A Venda de Alcoutim”, located on Avenida Duarte Pacheco, in Alcoutim (37°28’15.6″N 7°28’16.5″W).

All the texts in this exhibition are a dialogue between the narrator and Isabel Ferreira, who tells us the most important things about “Cerâmicas de Alcoutim” in the first person.

It will be inaugurated on September 8th, at 12 pm, together with the new space “A Venda de Alcoutim“, integrated into the program of the official celebrations of Municipality Day.

Photo exhibition “Viagem ao Algarve”

Photo exhibition “Viagem ao Algarve”

Casa dos Condes – Carlos Brito Municipal Library, Rua 1º de maio, Alcoutim

The Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve (DRCAlg, presents, on September 8th, at 2:45 pm, at the Casa dos Condes – Carlos Brito Municipal Library – , in Alcoutim, the literary itinerary of Alcoutim, from the “Saramago Literary Route in the Algarve”. This moment will also be marked by the inauguration of the photographic exhibition “Viagem ao Algarve”, a project by the association 1/4 Escuro, Association of Amateur Photographers of Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA), supported by DRCAlg, and carried out in collaboration with the Fundação José Saramago, and the Algarve Tourism Board, which is now hosted by the Alcoutim City Council, as part of the Alcoutim Municipal Festivities celebrations.

The “Viagem ao Algarve” exhibition has already toured Vila Real de Santo António, Castro Marim, Lepe (Huelva), Olhão and Tavira, and will cover all the municipalities that make up the “Saramago Literary Route in the Algarve”.

These projects are an opportunity to make known a territory that has inspired several writers, namely the places, monuments, landscapes, flavors and people, but also to promote the Algarve as a destination for literary tourism.

The motto for creating the itineraries, the so-called “Saramago Literary Route in the Algarve”, was the desire to reflect on the territory: if that was the Algarve seen, in 1980, by José Saramago, what will the Algarve look like now? Seen through the eyes of author Diego Mesa. The challenge for the photographers participating in the project was to visit the aforementioned Algarve municipalities and be inspired, photographically, by the texts written by José Saramago during his visit to the Algarve. The photographer from the Algarve, André Boto, distinguished by the FEP – Federation of Professional European Photographers as “European Photographer of the Year” in 2023, participates in the project with Silves’ photography and with the editing of the remaining photographs selected for the exhibition.

Exhibition “Aqueducts of Portugal: Water and Heritage”, by Pedro Inácio

Exhibition “Aqueducts of Portugal: Water and Heritage”, by Pedro Inácio

Casa dos Condes, Alcoutim

Monday to Friday, except holidays

9:30 am — 1:00 pm | 2:00 pm — 5:00 pm

The exhibition includes photographs that result from the photographic survey, started in 2007, by the museologist Pedro Inácio, within the scope of the research work that culminated in the publication of the book “Patrimóvel Cultural da Água-Roteiro de Aquedutos” edited, in 2021, by the City Council de Mafra and institutionally supported by the National Commission of UNESCO and by the Water Museum of EPAL.

Through this exhibition, we travel through one of the most relevant testimonies of our historical and cultural heritage, highlighting the importance of these ancient gravity water supply systems, of which the Conímbriga aqueduct, built during the Roman Empire, in the 1st century AD, stands out, as well as as some hydraulic works classified as World Heritage (namely in Elvas, Évora, Mafra and Tomar).

Pedro Inácio was born in Lisbon, has a degree in Historical Sciences and a Master’s Degree in Museology and Heritage and is currently a Museologist and Conservator of the EPAL Water Museum.
