The River Museum’s membership in the Portuguese Industrial Tourism Network
The River Museum, the main branch of the Alcoutim Municipal Museum, is part of the Portuguese Industrial Tourism Network (RPTI), through its governing body – the Municipality of Alcoutim.
For the Municipality of Alcoutim, the River Museum’s membership in the Portuguese Industrial Tourism Network aims to attract new audiences, as well as to value and promote the cultural and intangible cultural heritage and the memories and traditions linked to fishing and fishing techniques characteristic of the Lower Guadiana region.
The RTA intends to meet the expectations of tourists seeking different, authentic and original experiences in a segment little known to Algarve tourists, showcasing places, products and production processes from the region’s historical and cultural past, as well as their current uses/transformations.
Thus, the Algarve Tourism Region, in collaboration with the Municipality of Alcoutim, included the River Museum in the RPTI (Regional Planning and Tourism Network), as a resource for Industrial Tourism in the Algarve region and a reminder of the fishing activities and techniques of the Guadiana River.

Exhibition “Mediterranean Diet – Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”
Traveling exhibition of the Tavira Municipal Museum
The Alcoutim store, on Avenida Duarte Pacheco, in Alcoutim, will host, from April 4th to December 30th, the traveling exhibition of the Tavira Municipal Museum, entitled “Mediterranean Diet – Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”.
Conceived as an integral part of the Safeguarding Plan approved by UNESCO, this traveling exhibition reveals the richness and diversity of the Mediterranean Diet, a millennial heritage that transcends simple food.
The exhibition consists of 19 bilingual panels, inviting visitors to explore the multiple dimensions of this living heritage: from ancient traditions to the cultural landscapes that sustain it; from its contribution to health and well-being to sustainable practices that respect natural cycles; from community celebrations to techniques passed down through generations.
The exhibition presents summaries and images that illustrate the millennia-long history of the Mediterranean Diet, its relationship with astrological cycles and seasonal products, the journey from its nomination to its inscription by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as well as other fundamental aspects that characterize this Mediterranean way of life.
We invite you to join this journey and discover how this dietary model has transformed into a lifestyle and a global example of sustainability, conviviality, and respect for nature.
